This page should hopefully keep track of the big changes in the GNU/Linux world mostly linked of things like Slashdot etc :)
25/02/09 - Flavor of the Week
So recently we had a little poll on the mailing list again of what Operating system we are using and why we use it etc. This is the 2nd poll we have had and it seems to have a changed since the last poll a few years back. So the results are in and are as follows:
Debian - 7
Ubuntu - 9
Arch - 1
Linux-Mint - 2
Red Hat 4 - 1
OSX - 2
This was kind of hard to tally up because everyone uses a lot of different software for specific purpose. I guess the power of GNU/Linux distros as each of them can be really good at doing specific tasks, general Debian for the server/mythbox style stuff or Arch/Ubuntu Desktop workstations and Linux mint is one for the laptop to be up and running quick. And Debain also for the desktop, i guess it really is the universal operating system!
I guess Ubuntu is the winner though i could be persuaded otherwise as overall i guess Ubuntu was the desktop os but as Colin Turner pointed out he has 12 servers running Debian :D! So the mailing list results are over at: blug-mailinglist
28/01/09 - Big Buck Bunny
The latest open-movie Big-buck-Bunny, this is the newest film from the Blender-foundation. It was the successor to: elephants-dream, the thing to note about these films each of them may be short but people forget each of them are both non-profit and using nothing but community-tools.
So see for yourself what amazing graphical content you can create using only Blender GIMP and Inkscape, i am not too sure about Elephants dream but Big buck bunny all the developers used ubuntu as the OS and had their in-house blender(they were developing blender as the movie progressed and release a new version at the end) and gimp and inkscape. And just made the films in a matter of months and while doing changed how you Rig models in Blender, re-made particle systems for large complicated objects like tree's for animations mow the animation process in Blender now is much much more simplified as blender figures out a lot for you.
The Blender foundation is an amazing project they are constantly making progress listen to one of the latest episodes of the linux-outlaws-72 you can see what they are up to! Anyawys its definitely worth downloading each of these movies Big-Buck-Bunny is very well directed and reminds me of my childhood cartoons... Tom & Jerry style antics :-)!
27/01/09 - GNU/FRY
Gnu/Fry This is definitely worth checking out if your from the UK you may know this man from such programs like QI. Shows how Steven Fry is committed a to Free and Open Source software and the Free Culture itself. This is something a lot of people in the Free culture community really wouldn't expect, also coupled with the fact in the video he refers to gNewSense very often and recommends it! this is the main GNU/Linux Distribution that the Free Software Foundation recommend, this is very cool from the fact on this distribution you wont find _anything_ that will help install proprietary non-sense, so what i mean is that its not for the faint-hearted.
Although i love my GNU freedom, I do still like to be able to play my random games in wine, or play .mp3's my friends might send over irc... :) But i think a lot of people have a lot of respect for this man now, good on your GNU/Fry! If you see this and are thinking of checking out GN/Linux i think you would be safer using: linux-mint or: ubuntu. Its probably worth noting that linux-mint is essentially ubuntu, just with some things pre-configured and some video/music pre-installed its what helps a lot of people move to GNU/Linux much easier. And in closing i applaud Gnu/Fry for his awesome contribution to the free software culture!
