Hey guys
So before i start lets get some music going: http://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/Professor_Kliq This is easily one of the best albums I've heard in a long time, its very much background music is great to do work too! Check out track 'Bust This Bust That' or 'Surfs Up'. He is apparently well know in the free culture music scene :).
Really good turn out of fello g33k's :), even Colin after his crazy journey to Galway and back and he nearly feel asleep :). So there were many people = many different topics arose and were discussed, with cheer and merriment almost sounds christmas'y. So to kick off i would like to ask any one who remember's anything else or more to add please just reply, and i will append to the wiki article asap, or you can do it if your beat me too it ;) .
* @all: Monthly Question, live backup solutions, i've been using an
rsync of data and a cronjob to do database dumps. There are several more standard solutions replies would be great!
* @Colin: was sleepy! :)
* @Noodles: is sick but give away a lot of his old unused hardware to
several of us see his earlier mail of what his was giving away: http://groups.google.com/group/belfastlinux/browse_thread/thread/b1c8...
I stole his little cobalt server and i will have fun installing Debian on it ;). Thanks very much by the way i still owe you for it!
* @Steve: was half asleep from working out so much! @redbrain lent
him the dragon book on compiler development because he was interested.
* @Geoff: Is having fun with Jboss and Java Development in general
working with errors of 300 stack frames deep. How helpful and slow that can be! btw, has Geoff been added to the Planet Blug yet i haven't checked, I remember you've started a blog. reply needed
* @Stuart + @thegrieve: Emacs vs VIM, when will it end ;), emacs is
clearly the more superior. :) j/k
* @praest76: Has fun working with annoying people and gets frustrated
often dealing with in-experienced people!
* @Stuart: Server admin is a pain sometimes but kvm + libvirt is a
pain pure qemu is easier. Working on PHD is tough sometimes but he'll do it :)
* @thegrieve (his BSD friend<please insert name here>): Uses openBSD
full-time, & isn't it great when you just have something to 'just' work so you can get your job done! He knows a lot about security and his office has many security problems in their server back-end's.
* @all: DVR vs Video player. Or mythtv vs XBMC, Pro's and cons of
both, remember we have to re-tune our tv's soon apparently. reply to fill out the pro's and cons would be great!
* @all: Fortran 90.... awhhh yeah! :) Does anyone by any chance use
FORTRAN? I fixed up one of my lecture's code, which was in FORTRAN, to build with make and libtool, his build instructions were.. 'gfortran - -c -o ....', automake and autoconf done the job!
* @all + redbrain: GNU compile farm gets IRIX SGI MIPS machines and
Solaris Sparc :) fun times! anyone tried IRIX before, anything to look out for when developing on it? I had some problems with MIPS and Sparc with big vs little endian when working with a specific 32 bit hashing algorithm but fixed with fixed width integers.
* @Noodles: is the key-master of Debian,
http://www.earth.li/~noodles/blog/2009/08/back-from-debconf9.html
* @redbrain: I am heading to LugRadio Live and OggCamp next month:
http://www.lugradio.org/live/2009/ & http://fossevents.org/tag/ogg-camp/ Should be great fun will tell you all about it next month :).
* @all: safe airlines, ryanair treats people like sheep! :) BMI is a
safe enough choice or easyjet.
* @Colin: Apology for Alan Turing was interesting:
http://www.piglets.org/serendipity/archives/97-Campaign-for-an-apolog...
* @Marty and @all: XML is a pain sometimes
http://martian.org/marty/2009/09/30/xml-is-a-huge-mess/
* @Steve educating @redbrain: Ruby can be used as a good scripting
language, Rails is the web-dev framework.
* @anyone: @noddles pointed out a there is place on debian-bugs a
list of all un-maintained packages/ wanted packages/ wanted features... reply with a link would be great! I would like to get more involved with debian since i used it so much.
* @everyone please feel free to tell me i am stupid and edit away and
reply with more stuff!
* @anyone: anyone interested in working on a paper with me @redbrain
on build systems mainly autoconf and automake along with GIT and Debian packaging. Please feel free to contact me would be great to get some more people involved!
I really hope everyone had as good as time as i always have! I will see you all next month! I think some of us owe noddles and Colin for their free hardware passed down from between them! :)
