Hey guys
Another great night! :)
There was a good turn out, before i forget you should check out this album on Jamendo its great (http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/26656 - listen to track 2 ). Anyways so the details of what was discussed.
One last thing it would be great if Colin and Geoff could fill in some links/urls for me read through for the links i am missing :)
* @all: Java whats your opinion, we sort of come to the conclusion
that its a pretty dominant language for the wrong reasons in industry and is becoming detrimental to the understanding of Computers from an engineering perspective although it has some very good uses for rapid prototyping remaining cross-platform because of its extensive _BULTIN_ API as well as reliability a decent performance.
* @all: Free software communities interaction with the outside or new
comers can be quite terrible and be very off putting, are we too defensive or have too large an ego in largely technical aspects of the computing industry/community.
* @Geoff: Has a new blog and would like Marty to put his RSS on the
Planet, link to your blog would be awesome! :)
* @steve: Bar Camp was fun, we hope to have some presentations from
us at the next one, next year! :)
* @Colin: about noodles: Has been elected onto a new Board with
Debian and Funding last night, Colin would you reply with the link and what it's all about?
* @Colin: Idea for a new site, peer-review.net for collaboration of
research papers/ideas to be free and be open to any level of computing industry or any industry like physics etc, as in new ideas in existing technologies or pure research articles etc. Could be linked into Launchpad as a next set of collaboration and research for the community, in the spirit of serious research being for anyone/everyone.
* @All: The bouncing cows game on Colin's android phone is great fun
and this was the main reason he bought it ;)
* @All: Following up the ethics thread from the list on why the GPL
is very dominant and the comparability of mixed licensing. GPL is safe as its a very serious and well known license, public domain license's aren't well know could be dangerous. BSD is compatible with the GPL. And the various other licensing quams with people not licensing code on a site but putting it up and the end users can be liable as they didn't have a license to do so.
* @redbrain: Got my fsf copy-approval in the pipeline signed the
copy-approval for automake and GCC, Currently on the way back to Boston :) I got stickers wooo.
* @redbrain: my new programming language crules, its still very alpha
buts its half working for some of the control structures etc, more on this when i finish up a mini paper on how and why coming soon.
* @all: we moved into the little nook behind the bar near the end of
the night it helped when the music suddenly got very loud! :)
* @all: mono its a good technology we shouldn't be that afraid about
it, or should we? The latest Gnome-do is cool if you use the docky theme, so is tomboy and banshee is my media player of choice.
Anyways thats the most of what i remember was discussed if you have any other things to add feel free to chop and change :)
Hope everyone is have a good summer! See you all next month.

My goodness, not just a hyper efficient secretary, but with a soundtrack too!

Actually, it was that Noodles was elected to the SPI board (and obviously was absent since he's still at Debconf). For those who don't know. SPI is Software in the Public Interest, an organisation for promoting FOSS essentially. You can read for yourself at
SPI is closely associated with lots of projects, and perhaps particularly with Debian. But there's lots of others there too.
Anyone can become an SPI member, and to be a "contributing" member you need to show some activity in FOSS work. If anyone is interested, head along to the website.

Oh crap. :-) Now you've gone and actually recorded this in some semi formal way I'm going to have to actually get on with it and do it, aren't I? If anyone is interested in joining a project, I'd be delighted to have any help you can offer.

Delighted I could help!
I think that's all the links / extra stuff you needed from me.
Thanks for such a thorough write up.
PS. I was the first one at the pub tonight and given that I couldn't remember if the list message had mentioned the "snug" thought it was better to sit in the previous place this time. We did move to the snug when the music became, actually quite shockingly loud, at around 9:15 pm, but it wasn't very much quieter. Still a bit better though.
CT.

hi Phil
think you've covered most of the bases!
My new blog is at http://GeoffMacartney.com/blog. Marty, if you're reading this, would it be possible to add it to the Blug planet? Thanks.
I'm not sure we reached a conclusion on the Java thing - not a consensus anyway! I think it's dominant for good reasons - you've mentioned several, productivity, cross-platform, extensive libraries and frameworks, and good enough performance (not as fast as C/C++, I agree, but still good, these days at least). I'm not sure about "detrimental to understanding computers", I guess it is much further removed from the metal than C++. Certainly I think it's WAY harder for someone to migrate from Java to C++ than the other way round. I'm a C++ man really, but I have done a fair bit of Java, and I like it.
And I lost my Tux badge! boohoo ;-)
